Dealing with Peer Pressure

As we grow older, we are faced with some tough choices, especially if you’re an adolescent. When you’re young, it’s sometimes hard to know the difference between right and wrong and that makes you easily susceptible to the actions of the people around you. When someone you are friends with tries to influence the way you act, or try and get you to do something you don’t want to, that’s called peer pressure.

When you’re an adolescent all you really want to do is fit in. You want to be just like the ‘cool’ kids and be seen as one of them regardless of what they want you to do. Maybe they smoke, drink or go somewhere they aren’t supposed to be and will pressure you into joining them.. You know that it’s wrong but because of peer pressure you may find yourself agreeing to do it. Again, this all stems from the need to fit in and the fear of being made fun of or rejected if you refuse.

So how do you deal with peer pressure? If you do find that you are in a situation where you feel your peers are pressuring you into doing things you don’t want to do then you might want to re-evaluate your friendship with them. Friends are supposed to be a positive influence on you, they are supposed to be people who want the best for you. If you surround yourself with people who make good decisions then you start to become like them. The same goes for those who make bad decisions. The way our peers act does influence us to an extent.

You have to remember that the phrase ‘everyone else is doing it’ doesn’t have to apply to you. It might not be easy being the one to break the norm but if you don’t want to do something then you shouldn’t do it. It’s more important to stand by your beliefs and instincts even at the risk of not fitting in. If they have a problem with it, then they weren’t true friends to begin with.

The main thing is to try an be your own person. Someone who is independent and doesn’t need other people telling you what to do. Know who are the right people to have in your life are and keep them close for as long as you can. They are the ones who will bring out the best in you.
