H&M Anti-Racism Protest

The Hennes & Mauritz clothing store (H&M) recieved quite the backlash over the past weeks over a controversial advertisement that was posted online.

The advert featured a black child who was wearing a hoodie with the phrase “coolest monkey in the jungle” printed on it. The ad sparked an anti-racism protest that resulted in H&M’s stores being trashed. Nobody was injured in the protest and H&M temporarily closed down their stores.

The incident also caused music artist The Weekend to pull out of his collaboration with them. “Woke up this morning shocked and embarrassed by this photo. I’m deeply offended and will not be working with @hm anymore.” he writes on Twitter.

H&M have apologized for the incident and have pulled the item form stores. “We strongly believe that racism and bias in any shape or form, deliberate or accidental, are simply unacceptable.” H&M writes on their website. “We stress that our wonderful store staff had nothing to do with our poorly judged product and image.”
