Ghosting in Relationships

Ghosting is just another term that has made its way into our everyday lives. For those who have never heard of the term, it is when someone in your life, usually a significant other, cuts of all communication with you with no reason what so ever. The person is said to have ghosted on you.

So why do people ghost? Ghosting is usually done by a person in an attempt to end a relationship with someone. They do it in the hopes that the person they are ghosting will get the hint and avoid hurting their feelings by actually ending things. It’s them wanting to take the easy way out so they avoid an awkward situation.

In actual fact, ghosting on someone hurts a lot more than an actual breakup. Firstly, it can seriously damage someone’s self-esteem. They find themselves wondering what could have possibly happened. Maybe something happened like an accident or they lost their phone or maybe they are just really busy. Eventually, when they do get the hint, they can’t help but wonder if they did something wrong. You are basically showing them how easy it can be to cut them out of your life and that can lower anybody’s self-worth.

According to Psychology Today, social rejection is the same as physical pain. Just because you can’t see it physically, doesn’t mean it hurts less. You should consider the other persons feelings before deciding to ghost. Put yourself in their shoes, how would you feel?

If you have experienced ghosting, remember that it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with them not being able to handle situations like an adult.
